Abstract :

Metal matrix composites are heterogeneous systems containing matrix and reinforcement. Their physical and mechanical properties can be tailored according to requirement. They are used in automobile, aircraft and marine industries because of their increased corrosion resistance. In this paper weight loss corrosion tests are conducted on ZA-27/ TiO2 metal matrix composites in different concentrated neutral chloride solutions like sodium chloride solutions. ZA-27 is the matrix and the reinforcement is TiO2. Composites are prepared by liquid melt metallurgy technique using vortex method. Matrix alloy is also casted in the same way for comparison. Composites containing 2, 4 and 6 percent of TiO2 are prepared according to ASTM standards. Cylindrical specimens of 20mm length, 20 mm dia are machined. Weight loss corrosion studies are carried out in 0.035%, 0.352% and 3.5% solutions of sodium chloride according to ASTM standards G69-80. Specimens are dipped in the corrodent and removed at every 24 hours of interval. Using the weight loss of the specimen the corrosion rate is calculated using the formula 534W/DAT. The corrosion rate decreases with increase in the exposure time for all specimens in all corrodents. Corrosion rate also decreases with the increase in reinforcement content of the composites.

Abstract :

Complexes of 2-(8-Quinolinol-5-yl)-amino methyl-3,5-di phenyl-Pyrazoline with Cu(II), Ni(II) and Mn(II) have been synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, IR spectra, PMR spectra, Reflectance spectra, Conductivity measurements and antimicrobial activity. These studies revealed that they are having octahedral geometry of the type [ML2 (H2O)2]. The compounds show net enhancement in activity on coordination of metals with ligand but moderate activity as compared to standard drugs.

Abstract :

Fenoverine is an antispasmodic drug. Three simple, sensitive and accurate spectrophotometric methods have been developed for the determination of fenoverine in pure state and in its pharmaceutical dosage forms. The developed Method A is based on the ion association complex formation of methyl orange with drug and it shows maximum absorption at ë max 400 nm; Linearity in the range of 10-30 ìg/mL. Method B involves the reaction of fenoverine with CA/AC2O reagent. The developed chromogen in Method B exhibits maximum absorption at ë max 620 nm and Linearity in the range of 30-100 ìg/mL. Method C is based on the formation of coordination complex between fenoverine and CTC. The developed chromogen in Method C shows maximum absorption at ë max 620 nm; Linearity in the range of 100-500 ìg/mL. The results obtained were statistically evaluated and were found to be accurate and reproducible.

Abstract :

The Photochemical and photo catalytic reactions have been studied under ultra violet light. The effect of pH, effect of concentration, effect of amount of semiconductor and effect of semiconductor, effect of intensity of light have been observed. The results obtained during the course of present investigations clearly indicate that the photolysis of Cypermethrin is fastest in the ultraviolet light in the presence of semiconductors. The reaction is much slow without catalysts. A tentative mechanism has been proposed for photochemical reaction.

Abstract :

2-Acetylthiophene isonicotinoylhydrazone (ATINH) has been employed for the direct, non-extractive spectrophotometric determination of mercury. The reagent instantaneously forms a green yellow coloured species (1:2 Hg-ATINH complex) with mercury(II) in acidic medium (pH 6.0, sodium acetate-acetic acid buffer) which remains constant for more than 12hours. The species exhibits maximum absorbance at 420 nm ,with a molar absoprtivity of 4. 1 x 103 L. mol-1 cm-1. Beer's law is valid over the concentration range of 3.2-32.0 ppm of Hg(II). The Sandell's sensitivity of the complex is 0.875 g cm-2 of Hg(II). Large number of cations and anions and complexing agents do not interfere in the determination of mercury. The method was successfully applied to biological and soil samples.

Abstract :

The oxidation of 1- Phenylethanol was investigated to compare the polymer substrate supported reagent with a commercially available cross-linked polymeric reagent. The reagent supported on anion exchange resin was found to be more efficient in the oxidation reaction. The reagent is very easily separated from the reaction mixture and can be manually removed from the reaction mixture, which remains clear during and after the reaction. The kinetics of oxidation of 1-Phenylethanol with chromic acid supported on anion exchange resins like Amberlyst A-26 [Cl-], Duolite A-101 [Cl-] and Ambersep 900 [OH] in 1,4-dioxane has been studied. The reaction is found to be of zero order each in concentration of alcohol and oxidant. The stoichiometry of the reaction has been found to be 2:1. The oxidation products have been isolated and characterized by their derivatives, UV and FT-IR spectral studies. The effect of substituent's on the rate of oxidation and activation parameters for the overall reactions has been computed from Arrhenius plot.

Abstract :

Aqueous Effluents obtained from the discharge pit of a Flow Station- a crude oil and associated natural gas processing plant at Utorogu in Delta State of Nigeria were analyzed for both physico-chemical parameters and heavy metals. The results obtained were compared with the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) limits. The result showed that both the Temperature and Total Suspended Solids monthly mean values were below the DPR limits for Temperature and Total Suspended Solids throughout the year while the pH monthly mean values above the DPR (minimum) limits for pH were recorded for the months of April, May, June, July and August respectively. Monthly mean values higher than the DPR limits were recorded for Turbidity for the months of January, February and December; and the months of February and May for Chemical Oxygen Demand; Electrical Conductivity monthly mean values were observed to be relatively high throughout the year while moderate monthly mean values were recorded for Total Alkalinity. The BOD5, Salinity and Oil and Grease monthly mean values obtained were all below the DPR limits for the three parameters throughout the year. For DO, SO42--S, NO3--N & NH4+- N parameters appreciably low monthly mean values were recorded throughout the year. The wastewater samples were found to also contain heavy metals such as: Total Chromium, Pb2+, Total Fe, Zinc and Copper. Monthly mean values higher than the DPR limits were recorded for twelve months for Total Chromium, seven months for Lead, two months for Total Iron and none for Copper and Zinc.

Abstract :

In arid and semi arid area, irrigation is very essential for successful agriculture. Quality of irrigation water is an important factor of crop production. Whatever may be the source of irrigation water, some soluble salts are always dissolved there in these are mostly sodium, calcium, magnesium and some time potassium as cations and chloride, fluoride, carbonate, and bi- carbonate or nitrate as anions. Salinity hazard which is associated with high soluble salts in water and measured in terms of electrical conductivity (EC), water having an EC value of more than 2.25 m.mohs /cm2 is always unsafe for irrigation use. The alkali hazard is related to the development of alkalinity in the soil and is expressed as SAR Residual Sodium Carbonate is an indirect expression of CO3-2 and HCO3-1 of Na+ in ground water. Based on the RSC value the irrigation water are classified in conclusion.
